Education was started in town with the establishment of Trijuddha School by Juddha Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana during his regime. This city has made a rapid development in the field of education by the establishment of many private as well as public schools and colleges for quality education, which has stopped many from going out of the city for education and also attracted so many students from neighboring districts like Bara, Rautahat, Siraha, Saptari, Sarlahi, Malangwa, etc.
Thakuram Multiple Campus is the first campus (outside Kathmandu valley) in town as well as in Narayani zone.
Thakur Ram Multiple Campus, one of the popular educational institutions of Nepal was established in 2008 B.S. The campus which is affiliated with Tribhuvan University, offers quality education in Science, Management, Humanities and Education streams in Bachelor’s and Master’s Level.
It also has a state-owned Nursing Campus, which was established in 2032 BS (1975 AD) with Auxiliary Health Worker (AHW) programme and in 2038 BS Health Assistant (HA). The Proficiency Certificate level of Nursing program was started in 2043 B.S. and BNS (Hospital Nursing) Programme in 2068 BS.
It has many Commerce, and Science higher schools and a medical college that is National Medical College Birganj, where students from all over Nepal and also India come to study with the aspirations of becoming doctors.
